Click here for a website which reports incidences at airports involving the loss, injury, or death of an animal during travel. Be sure to read the reports of the incidences as most can be attributed to age or underlying preexisting health conditions and not the actual travel. The site also provides information and tips on traveling with a pet.

It is advised to get a full checkup on your dog before you travel with them. Airlines require a health certificate from a vet before you will be allowed to travel with your dog.

Be sure to check your airlines pet travel requirements (before you get to the airport).

Be a responsible dog owner and make sure you have all of your dog's needed supplies when you travel with your dog. Some suggestions are listed below:

Food & Water: Enough food for your dog for the length of your stay and some extra just in case. You can also research the area before hand to see if any local stores carry your brand of food and have it in stock so that you can purchase the food upon your arrival. Bottled water is recommended when you're away from home. Sometimes local water can upset your dog's digestive system and you don't want to deal with that on show weekend.

Dishes: Food and water bowls. A deep water container works well for when you dog is in the ring. A small bucket with a lid works great.

Meds: Enough of any medication or supplements your dog takes. Some anti-diarhea medicine (Pepto Bismol for pups and Immodium AD for adults works). Some Benedryl or similar is a good idea too.

Crate Supplies: Extra sheets of newspaper to line the crate. Some kitchen garbage bags. A roll of paper towels. A container of popup wipes. Some disposable gloves. Some air freshener. These all come in very handy if your dog or puppy has an accident in their crate during flight. You don't want to wait to get to the hotel to do the clean up. To prep your dog's crate for their flight or long drive, line the bottom of the crate with at least a 1/4 inch of newspaper sheets then add at least a 4 inch loft of shredded newspaper on top of that. If your dog does have an accident most of it will be absorbed by the newspaper and you can just roll it all right up.

Hardware: Collar, leash, and a spare of each. Stuff happens and things can break. You can usually find one or more vendors at the show with good collars and leashes if you don't already have extra.

Grooming Supplies: Some dog towels from home, please don't use the hotel towels unless they have provided them in the dog bathing area. Some shampoo, even if you bath your dog before you leave home for the show you may need to do some emergency cleanup. No one expected it to be so rainy and muddy last year. Brush or brushes.
